Paul Heng<\/span>\u00a0found<\/span>ed Unigen in 1991 out of <\/span>his<\/span>\u00a0garage<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0starting out by\u00a0<\/span>brokering memory deals<\/span>\u00a0to b<\/span>ridge the gap between the dominant memory manufacturers that were overseas with the increasing demand for memory components domestically.\u00a0<\/span>Over the past three decades, the company has grown and strengthened exponentially. Thirty<\/span>\u00a0years later, Unigen remains one of the few privately held technology companies in Silicon Valley with the staying power of some of the more well-known behemoths that have come to define the region.<\/span>\u00a0We recently spoke with Heng, founder, owner and CEO, to find out more about the company\u2019s growth, from its\u00a0<\/span>humble beginnings in his\u00a0<\/span>garage to its reputation today as a quality leader.<\/span><\/div>\n

Paul, we understand that Unigen recently celebrated its 30<\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0anniversary. Congratulations on reaching this milestone. What are you most proud of during your 30-year history with Unigen?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Having just celebrated our 30th anniversary,\u00a0<\/span>I am proud to say that\u00a0<\/span>Unigen has remained true to our roots, first and foremost as a technology company with expertise in memory and storage. However, our staying power for\u00a0<\/span>three<\/span>\u00a0decades has not been without its challenges and adversity<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0by being flexible<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0we have been able to adapt our business to the changing markets and environment. That may be what I am most proud of when I reflect on Unigen\u2019s history.<\/span><\/p>\n

For readers who may not be familiar with Unigen, can you give us a brief\u00a0<\/span>company\u00a0<\/span>description?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

I founded\u00a0<\/span>Unigen<\/span>\u00a0in 1991<\/span>. Today we are<\/span>\u00a0an established global leader in the design and manufacture of<\/span>\u00a0original and custom SSD, DRAM, NVDIMM modules and Enterprise IO solutions.\u00a0<\/span>We\u2019re h<\/span>eadquartered in Newark, C<\/span>A<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0operate state<\/span>\u2013<\/span>of<\/span>\u2013<\/span>the<\/span>\u2013<\/span>art manufacturing facilities in the Silicon Valley Bay Area of California and near Hanoi Vietnam, along with\u00a0<\/span>five<\/span>a dditional engineering and support facilities located around the globe. <\/span>We<\/span>\u00a0market<\/span>\u00a0our\u00a0<\/span>products to both enterprise and client OEMs worldwide focused on embedded, industrial, networking, server, telecommunications, imaging, automotive and medical device industries.\u00a0<\/span>To utilize our capacity to its fullest potential, and to also be more diversified, we have entered into the\u00a0<\/span>e<\/span>lectronic\u00a0<\/span>m<\/span>anufacturing\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>ervices<\/span>\u00a0(EMS<\/span>) business, which has been very complementary to our OEM product business.\u00a0<\/span>We<\/span>\u00a0also offer best<\/span>\u2013<\/span>in<\/span>\u2013<\/span>class electronics manufacturing services (EMS), including new product introduction\u00a0<\/span>(NPI)\u00a0<\/span>and volume production, supply chain management, assembly & test, TaaS (<\/span>t<\/span>est-as-a-<\/span>s<\/span>ervice) and post-sales support.<\/span>\u00a0Today,\u00a0<\/span>Unigen has\u00a0<\/span>more than<\/span>\u00a0300,000 sq ft<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0offering full turnkey services to our internal and external partners.<\/span><\/p>\n

W<\/span>hy did<\/span>\u00a0you found Unigen in 1991? What was the industry lacking that you believed Unigen could provide?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

I saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between the dominant memory manufacturers that were overseas with the increasing demand for memory components domestically. The early\u00a0<\/span>19<\/span>90s w<\/span>ere<\/span>\u00a0like the gold rush for the memory market. I was able to build strong<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0trusted partnerships with both the memory vendors and the customers, and things took off from there.<\/span><\/p>\n

What are your company\u2019s core values?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

We focus on many values, but our core include the following three:<\/span><\/p>\n

    Has the focus of the company changed over the past three decades? If so, how and why?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

    Not the focus<\/span>\u00a0because\u00a0<\/span>our anchor is still in memory and storage technology expertise. However, we have adapted our business model over time to meet the demands of the industry. We now offer electronic manufacturing services, from NPI to full production. We have entered into new product areas like SSDs, NVDIMMs and IO products. We are continually looking at the best way to leverage our expertise into new areas.<\/span><\/p>\n

    When and why did you decide to add an EMS aspect to the company?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

    It was around 2011. We were doing a lot of business with a large hyperscale company in the\u00a0<\/span>B<\/span>ay area. They approached us and asked if we would be open to a CM model and<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0of course,\u00a0<\/span>we<\/span>\u00a0wanted to support them any way that\u00a0<\/span>we<\/span>\u00a0could. At the same time, we had been expanding our manufacturing footprint aggressively to stay in front of our customers\u2019 needs. We had also become too concentrated on\u00a0<\/span>one or two<\/span>companies driving our factory utilization, so we needed to diversify our business in order to ride through any downside in demand. Today, the EMS business is an equal partner with the OEM product side for Unigen.<\/span><\/p>\n

    It sounds as if the company has grown significantly over the years, with facilities placed in strategic areas of the world. Vietnam is the largest of the facilities, correct? Does each facility, including the United States, run like the Vietnam facility just on a smaller scale or does each facility have its own specialty?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

    Correct, Vietnam is our largest facility.\u00a0<\/span>Our goal is to have a \u201ccopy exact\u201d manufacturing footprint regardless of the location. So<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0if one site has an issue, we still have supply chain continuity for our customers. Having said that, our Newark site tends to have more NPI activity solely based on its location. There are\u00a0<\/span>many\u00a0<\/span>startups in\u00a0<\/span>S<\/span>ilicon\u00a0<\/span>V<\/span>alley, and we\u2019ve made it a focus of ours to help incubate these companies by offering our EMS services. Of course, we would like this to expand into larger business as the companies become successful, but we are also aware that the success rate of technology startups is low. We are willing to take that risk with them.<\/span><\/p>\n

    What types of markets and customers do you target?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

    Our primary markets and customers service the cloud. Data centers, enterprise server and storage, networking, etc. all feeds into this.\u00a0<\/span>Recently, w<\/span>e have had success in expanding our EMS business into\u00a0<\/span>electric vehicles (<\/span>EV<\/span>)\u00a0<\/span>and medical devices. Although these have not been our primary industries, the same level of quality and reliability that our enterprise customers have come to expect from us still apply. And the processes and infrastructure we put in place makes this a seamless transition for us.<\/span><\/p>\n

    What specific problems are customers trying to solve when they turn to\u00a0<\/span>Unigen<\/span>?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

    It depends on the customer, and that\u2019s the beauty of Unigen. We are very flexible to our customers<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0needs. If they require full turnkey support, we have that capability. If they just want to run a<\/span>n\u00a0<\/span>NPI build, we can support that as well. Customers come to Unigen to make their lives easier.<\/span><\/p>\n

    How do customers choose suppliers like your business? What factors are most important to the buying decision?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

    Well, I\u2019d be lying if I didn\u2019t say cost was a factor<\/span>\u00a0but<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0as stated earlier, our ultimate goal is to make life easy for our customers. We strive for longevity<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>to be a trusted partner in the long-term<\/span>\u00a0as opposed to simply a\u00a0<\/span>transactional relationship to turn a quick profit. We offer flexibility in order to meet the changing needs of our customers and the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Why do people choose to do business with your company rather than your competitors?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

    O<\/span>ur reputation in the industry\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>as someone that can be trusted.\u00a0<\/span>We have worked hard to build this reputation and we do not take it lightly. Therefore, w<\/span>e\u00a0<\/span>never\u00a0<\/span>cut corners, we\u00a0<\/span>never\u00a0<\/span>renege<\/span>\u00a0on our promises,\u00a0<\/span>and we always\u00a0<\/span>we meet our commitments.<\/span><\/p>\n

    In your opinion, w<\/span>hat is the one thing that\u00a0<\/span>Unigen<\/span>\u00a0does the best?<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

    We have a g<\/span>ive and take attitude\u00a0<\/span>that always\u00a0<\/span>result<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0in the most flexible model<\/span>\u00a0for our customers.<\/span><\/p>\n

    What would you most like readers to understand about Unigen?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

    There are four main aspects I would like readers to know about Unigen:<\/span><\/p>\n
